What is The Key Comprehension Routine?

The Key Comprehension Routine is a professional development program for educators of any subject who work with students in grades 4 to 12. Educators who participate in professional learning for this program learn how to teach students a set of research-based comprehension strategies that support listening and reading comprehension in any subject area, using content reading and instructional materials.

About This Book Study Online Guide

Educators have several options for participating in professional development for The Key Comprehension Routine, including:

  1. Live training delivered by a Keys to Literacy trainer using a virtual-live, online format, or delivered onsite at a school
  2. Asynchronous online course, or hybrid-online that combines an online course with live-virtual sessions facilitated by a Keys to Literacy trainer
  3. A do-it-yourself book study using The Key Comprehension Routine training book: you read chapters in the book, respond to reflection questions, and watch videos that support your independent learning.

This online guide is designed to provide video support if you have chosen option #3, the book study.

Materials You Will Need to Complete the Book Study

  • You will need a copy of The Key Comprehension Routine training book. When you register to complete this book study, Keys to Literacy will make arrangements with you to give you access to this book.
  • You will respond to book study questions that are provided in this online guide.
  • You will watch an introductory video before you begin reading the book, and four, shorter videos as you work your way through the book study. These videos are embedded in this online guide.

Complete the Book Study Independently, At Your Own Pace

This guide is designed to support individual educators who are completing the book study on their own. You can complete the chapter readings, complete the book study questions, and watch the videos at your own pace.

Partner With Other Educators

While this book study has been designed to be used by individual educators, it can also be used within peer learning communities to provide a shared professional development experience. A collaborative group can develop an agreed upon schedule for completing the readings for each part of the book study, and then share responses to the book study questions during collaborative meetings.

Joan Sedita

The course developer is Joan Sedita, founder of Keys to Literacy and author of the Keys to Literacy professional development programs. Keys to Literacy is based in Massachusetts, and provides literacy professional development to schools across the United States. For over 40 years, Joan has been an experienced educator and nationally recognized teacher trainer. She has authored multiple literacy professional development programs, including The Key Comprehension Routine, The Key Vocabulary Routine, Keys to Beginning Reading, Keys to Content Writing, Keys to Early Writing, and Keys to Close Reading. Beginning in 1975, she worked for 23 years at the Landmark School, a pioneer in the development of literacy intervention programs. As a teacher, principal, and director of the Outreach Teacher Training Program at Landmark, Joan developed expertise, methods, and instructional programs that address the literacy needs of students in grades K-12. Joan was one of the three lead trainers in MA for the Reading First Program and was a LETRS author and trainer. She received her M.Ed. in Reading from Harvard University and her B.A. from Boston College
